Artillery Huston Galyean
Artillery Huston Galyean was Cooper circa __ ___ 1860-1900.3 He "Art" is the third of four sons of Old Daniel by his unknown firt wife. Art is the only one of thee 4 sons to survive the years of the civil war. Joshua & Gilbert were apparently killed and William never reappeared after the '60 Knox census where he was living next to old Dan and Joshua. Art was a cooper as was Old Dan and Art lived his life in Knox Co. . . . According to Miss Lucille Deaderick, a descendant of Richard B. Galyon who was a brother to the above Artillery, a picture exists of James Arthur and Martha M. (Dotson) Galyon along with two of James Arthur's children.4 He According to hand written notes jotted down by my grandmother, (Tillery's granddaughter), Flora Smith Knight, he was "the most well read man around." She mentioned an "Auld Harp Songbook, and also that he had a lot of French books." He also played the violin and prided himself that he was a "voilinist, not a fiddler." There are differing versions about his role in the Civil War, but consistent with each version, is the fact that he did not go willingly and that he hid his wallet, money intact, before he left, and the family didn't know that it was there until he returned. One version is that he was working in the fields when the soldiers came along and told him that he was going, and that he hid his wallet in the flour barrel, and another is that he put it up on a shelf beneath the eaves of his log cabin. In any event, the family was left to fend for themselves during the war. Also, there is a marked difference on whether he was a Union or a Confederate soldier. The family did not hold slaves and were northern sympathizers. A letter written by his son, James Arthur Galyean in 1957 describes how he was a Union soldier, captured by the Rebels, escaped to the North and lost toes to frostbite during the ordeal. I have submitted a copy of this letter to the McClung Historical collection in the Knoxville library. However, no record of an Artillery Galyean, as a Union Soldier exists in the National Archives. The family in Knoxville says that he was taken by the Confederates to serve, which is why he did not go willingly. There is an A. Galyean listed as a Confederate from Washington Co., which may be him, or he may have been taken by an out of state regiment, passing through. A search of the pension applications has not yielded any application by Artillery or by Martha Galyean (or any other variation of the spelling) and he is not listed on the 1890 as a surviving Veteran, so this might reinforce the Confederate conscription story.
