Pedro I 'Crudelis'['the Cruel'] Alfonsez Name Suffix: Rey de Castilla [King-Castile]
REIGNED: King of Castile & Leon (1350-69)
Peter I 'The Cruel' 1334-69, Spanish king of CASTILE and LEON(1350-69). His
desertion of his wife, Blanche of Bourbon, for Maria Padilla and hisfavors to
the Padilla family offended the nobles and caused rebellions fomentedby his
half brother, later Henry II. With the help of ARAGON and France,Henry
conquered Castile and was crowned king in 1366. Peter retaliated bydefeating
Henry's army with the help of England in 1367. But Henry raised a newarmy,
which was victorious at Montiel (1369), and he killed Peter in a duelafter
the battle. Despite his reputation for cruelty, Peter is regarded bymany
historians as a defender of the rights of the commoners against thenobles.
