     John Maynard was born in 1630 at Hingham, Norfolk, England.¹ He married Mary Gates, daughter of Stephen Gates and Ann Veare, on 5 April 1658 at Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA.¹ John Maynard died on 22 December 1711 at Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA.²

     Stephen Gates was born circa 1597 at Norwich, England.¹ He was the son of Eustace Gates and Rose Wright. Stephen Gates was baptized on 26 December 1597.² He married Ann Veare on 5 May 1628 at Hingham, Norfolk, England.^3,4,2 Stephen Gates died after 9 June 1662 at Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA; His will was dated 9 Jun 1662 and proved 7 Oct 1662.^5,6
     He Per Torrey Stephen Gates sailed from Hingham, England on the 'Diligent' in 1638 and settled in Hingham, MA where he received a grant of 3 acres for a house lot, 12 acres for a 'greate Lott,' and a 3 acre planting lot. His house lot was on Town (now North) Street and was bounded on the north by the street, on the east by William Buckland's land and upon the west by the town swamp. In 1647 he received a grant of half an acre of salt marsh. On 26 June 1648 he sold his house lot, etc., to William Hersey, but remained in town for some time before his removal.

He may have lived in Cambridge for a short period of town, but he was one of the early settlers of Lancaster, MA where he subscribed to town orders 3 April 1654. While living in Lancaster, he was admitted freeman 14 May 1656. He was elected constable, at that time a responsible and honorable position. In 1657 he failed to notify the voters about a town meeting. In consequence he was fined 10 pounds, but the fine was remitted when he informed the court that his failure was due to sickness. In 1658 there was trouble between the Gates and Whitcomb families due to the fact that 3 sons of John Whitcomb had killed 3 swine belonging to Stephen Gates.

At the time of the Gates-Whitcomb trouble Stephen Gates was living in Sudbury, MA. He next appeared in Cambridge where he made his will 9 June 1662 and died before 29 Sept 1662 when the inventory of his estate was taken.

The History of Ryegate indicates that he was the emigrant ancestor of this family, second son of Thomas Gates of Norwich, Norfolk, England [now thought to be incorrect]. He came from Hingham, England to Hingham, MA in 1638 in the ship 'Diligent' with wife Ann (Hill) and two children. He settled in Hingham, removed to Lancaster where he lived in 1656 and later went to Cambridge where he died in 1662. He was the 10th generation from Thomas Gates, Esq. of Highcaster and Thurstenbie, Essex, England 1327. The successive generations are as follows: I. Thomas; II William; III. Sir Geoffrey: IV William: V. Sir Geoffrey; VI Geoffrey, VII. Geoffrey; VIII. Peter; IX; Thomas; X. Stephen. Later writings indicate his wife's name was Anne Veare,

Edward Harrison in his January 2006 article in the NEHGR indicates Stephen Gates may have not been living in Hingham. He writes: 'Stephen Gates was married at Hingham in 1628, and his third know child, Marie, was baptized there in 1636. However the place of baptism of his first and second children, Elizabeth and Stephen is unknown. He may have visited Hingham where he met his wife-to-be and subsequently returned there to marry her. He and his wife returned once again for the baptism of Marie. The facts suggest that Stephen lived some place other than Hingham prior to his move to Massachusett in 1638. Thus it may be incorrect to refer to Stephean as 'of Hingham, England'.' He was constable.⁷ He lived in 1638 at Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.^8,7 He lived in 1654 at Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA.⁹

     He 'Eustace Jaques of Cony West.... laborer' had a will dated 15 March 1725/6 which was proved in June 1626 which named his wife Rose; children Rose, Ales, Marie the older, Marie the younger, William, Thomas, Stephen and Symond. He also name his brother in law William Wright of Great Ellingham, Norfolk, England.

In the burial records Eustace Gages was spelled Jayuettes. Eustace Gates was also known as Eustace Jaques.
