  1. [S379] Jeff Knight, "Jeff Knight," e-mail to Kathleen Decker, October 29, 2009, I have found evidence of Thomas Knight’s wife Ann and she is Ann JORDAN as I thought, (99% sure but at these dates in the UK there is little concrete evidence). She was born in December 1765 in Lubenham and was christened on 13 December 1765 at Lubenham Church. Her parents were William and Elizabeth JORDAN of Lubenham, (not John of Papillon Hall, Lubenham, as I had suspected ....probably his brother). The fact that Thomas and Ann’s eldest daughter was called Elizabeth also supports the mother’s name as this is very common in the family at the time.
I have also discovered that Thomas was the local baker and Ann looked after the shop. The sons worked in the bakery as adolescent/young men before leaving to follow their own lives. After Thomas’ death, the “baker” role was taken by their son Thomas Nelson Knight (1799) and Ann lived with her son Thomas Nelson and his wife Elizabeth. They actually lived in a village called LAUGHTON which is a few miles north of Lubenham but still in Lubenham Parish, (despite it having its own church). Laughton is literally next door to Gumley, (a couple of miles), where the Jordan family originated. Thomas Nelson disappears in the 1840’s and William Jordan, previously a Silk Weaver ....(which tended to be a cottage industry undertaken on the basis of being paid for what you produce at home), becomes the baker, I assume taking over the baker aspect of the family concern previously undertaken by his brother. I did not find Thomas Nelson’s grave at Lubenham but, living at Laughton, he may be buried in Laughton churchyard? .....next visit!!!!
My biggest surprise is that I appear to be descended from Thomas Nelson Knight rather than his brother, your direct ancestor, William Jordan Knight, (i.e. we are linked one generation further back with Thomas and Ann Knight), despite masses of evidence to the contrary. I think I have most of this new link but I am currently checking it out. So far in this new line of research there now appears to be a link with the very large family of Knights who are from Ashby de la Zouch, also in Leicestershire ....I am now embarking on that part of the journey.

  5. [S382] Eurika Times-Standard, Michael Joseph Galyean passed away at his home in Hoopa on October 29, 2004. A native and resident of Hoopa, he was 59.

Michael Galyean or “Mike G” as his friends knew him, was a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. His tales of myth and legend captured and held his audiences with delightful fascination. His charming smile and sensitive care of the people he loved and cherished the most was felt throughout his daily life. All who knew him unrepentantly loved him. He was joy and mirth and beauty in the face of adversity and loyalty and strength in hours of need. He made us laugh till the muscles in our jaws and stomach cramped and the tears and snorts of hilarity could be heard over the mountain. In his younger years, he fancied himself a barber and studied at the Frederick and Charles Institute. His love of nature led him to work in the woods as a logger for 41 years. Uncle Mike was an avid reader. He loved fishing and teaching his grandchildren the importance and beauty of their culture, language and heritage.

He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Obie of Hoopa, and Melva Hurn of Arcata; his sisters, Faith Roesener and her husband Walter, Rosa Galyean of Orleans, CA, and Sylvia Littlefield and husband Roscoe of Weitchpec; his brother, John Galyean and wife Francis of Blue Lake; his grandchildren, Michelle, Miranda, Mike, Miles, Richard, Sophia, Tristin and Dominick; and great-grandchild, Lawrence Mitchell. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Anna, Stephanie, Laurie, Gayla, Gilbert, Gerald, Garth, Jeffrey, William, Greg, David, Gary, Timothy, Wayne Lee, James, Richard and Toby.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Mahon and father, Auburn Galyean.

Visitations will be held at Paul’s Chapel, 1070 H Street, Arcata, on Thursday, November 4, 2004, from noon to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Services will be held at Paul’s Chapel on Friday, November 5, at 11a.m. Scott Chez will officiate. Interment will follow the services at the Wausek Cemetery.

A pot luck reception will follow the services at the Yurok Tribal Community Office in Weitchpec.

Casket bearers will be Alan Bear, David Galyean, Simp Reed, Richard Rutherford, Jr., Jeffery Roesener, and Gary Albers, Jr. Honorary casket bearers are Bob Rakestraw, Willard Carlson, Buddy Bear, Austin Rakestraw, David Reece, Gilbert Myers, Gary Albers, Sr., Bill Wilson, Bill Crutchfield, Butch Reed and Ron Reed.
