    December 10, 2023
William "Bill" Leonard Foster, 71, of Syracuse, surrounded by his loving family, died peacefully Sunday, December 10, 2023.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon, Saturday, December 16 at St. Alphonsus Church. The Rev. Louis Vasile will celebrate the Mass.
Calling hours will be held at the church from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, prior to the Mass.
Burial will be in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Auburn.
Bill was born March 25, 1952, the second child of Robert and Alice O'Brien Foster's five children. He was an easy-going, sociable son, brother, and uncle who had a wide circle of friends in Syracuse, where he lived and practiced law for decades.
He recently had moved to his hometown of Auburn, living in the family's Anna Street home, which was built by his great-grandfather William Shaw.
Bill, or "Billy" as he was affectionately called by his family, grew up in a close-knit Irish Catholic family that instilled in him the importance of family and faith. He was named for his great-uncle, Monsignor William Leonard Shaw, who died December 11, 1980 and was a brother to his maternal grandmother.
Growing up, Bill and his family visited "Uncle Bill" every summer at his Monroe MI parish. Msgr. Shaw taught young Bill to play golf – a sport he enjoyed throughout his life – and took him to baseball games in nearby Detroit. Bill also learned to be an altar server during the family's Michigan visits.
Bill was a graduate of St. Alphonsus Catholic School and a 1970 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, where he played football and basketball. While at Mt. Carmel, he earned the nickname "Fireball" because he loved the red-hot candies and often shared them with classmates. He also played on city baseball teams, pitching a no-hitter once in Little League final playoffs.
In 1974, Bill graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Olean. Throughout his life, he was an ardent supporter of his alma mater, reuniting informally with "Da Bears," a group of about a dozen classmates mostly from his freshman floor in Devereux Hall where his nickname was "Bill City."
No matter what the weather, Bill never missed Bonnie's basketball games. He and another alum and close friend, Jim Price, shared rides to the games for years, often traveling through blustery snowstorms. His nieces and nephews enjoyed going to games with him, too, including stopping for a quick bite to eat at Angee's before gametime. Jim remained a faithful friend, visiting Bill often in Auburn and bringing Bill's favorite goodies from Harrison Bakery in Syracuse.
In 1977, Bill earned his Master's Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University. He worked for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services as a caseworker for several years before deciding to pursue a law degree.
He graduated in 1982 from Ohio Northern University Claude W. Pettit College of Law where his brother, Bob, a late Penn Yan attorney, also earned his law degree. The two brothers were close, always sitting together on either end of a couch at family gatherings, usually "talking law."
Bill was admitted to the Bar in 1984. He returned to Syracuse to private law practice for the next nearly 40 years. His practice included trusts and estates, personal injury, criminal law, and a great deal of pro bono work.
Throughout his life, Bill was very committed to helping the marginalized and underprivileged in his community, and always did so in a quiet, intelligent, effective, understated way. Friends say that, even in college, he was known for befriending those in need.
Never one to seek the limelight, Bill, nonetheless, was chosen as the Eastwood Chamber of Commerce's Man of the Year award - twice - for his community work in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse where he lived and worked.
Bill was a wonderful uncle, attending the sporting events, concerts, plays, and recitals of his three nieces and two nephews. He also enjoyed golf and Syracuse basketball games with them and never missed a birthday or special occasion. He liked clipping newspaper articles they might find interesting, and sending them through the mail with a typewritten note.
Bill's Catholic faith was very important to him. While in Syracuse, he was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and often helped with weekly Bingo games there.
He is survived by his three sisters: Mary (William) Rowe, Cheryl Foster, and Laura (Douglas) Cuthbert, all of Auburn; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Foster of Penn Yan; his nieces and nephews: Kara Foster of North Carolina; Megan (Ryan) Barkley of Victor; and John (Heather) Foster of Canandaigua; Connor Cuthbert of Washington DC and Ailish Cuthbert of Auburn; two great-nephews, Graham and Miles Barkley; several cousins, and many friends.
Bill was predeceased by his parents; brother, Bob Foster, in 2021; and cousin, Barbara "Bonnie" Dellostritto, of Auburn.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bonaventure University – Office of Advancement, P.O. Box 2519, 3261 West State Road, St. Bonaventure NY 14778. Attention: The Bonaventure Fund, the William Foster Memorial.

  1. [S33] The Citizen Online, online, PENN YAN - Robert C. Foster, 70, of Penn Yan, passed away Friday, April 9, 2021 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Bob was born on April 23, 1950 to Robert and Alice (O'Brien) Foster of Auburn, and was the oldest of their five children.

He grew up in a devout Irish Catholic family, who instilled in him the importance of faith and family. Bob's childhood Anna Street home – built by his great-grandfather William Shaw – was a happy gathering place for family, friends, and neighbors. Sunday night dinners were spent crowded around the dining room table, enjoying good food and lively conversation.

Growing up, Bob enjoyed playing baseball. In 1960, he pitched his All-Star Team to the city league championship. He loved swimming in the family pool and biking. He also learned how to play golf at an early age, a sport that he enjoyed throughout his life.

Bob was a graduate of St. Alphonsus School and Mt. Carmel High School in Auburn, Le Moyne College, and Ohio Northern University Claude W. Pettit College of Law.

After graduating from law school, Bob served as a law clerk in Rochester for then State Supreme Court Justice Robert Wagner. He then came to Penn Yan, where he began practicing law with Donald Schneider in September 1977. At various points during his early career, he served as the Assistant Public Defender and the Assistant District Attorney for Yates County, the Yates County Attorney, as well as the Attorney for the Towns of Starkey and Barrington. He also served as the Attorney for the Town of Milo – a position that he held for over forty years before stepping down this past fall. He was a former Director of the Yates County Legal Assistance Corp., a former President of the Yates County Bar Association, and a former member of the Penn Yan Lions Club. In April 1982, Bob and Don formed the law partnership Schneider & Foster. Bob opened his own private law practice in 1993.

Bob truly enjoyed practicing law. He focused his private practice on real estate, trusts and estates, elder law, wills, and municipal work. He was devoted to his practice, and to the many clients he served over the 44 years he practiced law in Penn Yan, working right up until his death.

On October 25, 1986, Bob and Carolyn Sheridan of Penn Yan were married in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Together, they raised three children: Kara, Megan, and John. Last July, they welcomed their first grandchild, Graham Robert Barkley, lovingly named after his grandfather.

Bob most enjoyed time spent with his family and with his extended family in Auburn. Road trips to Cape Cod, Myrtle Beach, Lake Placid, Pittsburgh, and New York City gave him great pleasure, and were filled with banter, coolers packed with egg salad sandwiches and cookies, and stops at favorite restaurants.

His family cherished his confident, calm, and steady ways, as well as his dry sense of humor. Two of his constant companions were the family's black labs, Jake and Rory, who were always eager to greet him at the door.

Bob's Catholic faith was very important to him, and family trips often included going to daily Mass. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.

In June 2011, after six years of dialysis, Bob became the recipient of a kidney transplant through Donate Life at Strong Memorial Hospital. That gift of life from an anonymous donor enabled Bob to live a normal life again – for nearly 10 years – until it was necessary for him to start receiving dialysis again in November 2020. Both Bob and his family are forever grateful for that precious gift.

Despite the health challenges he faced in recent years, Bob never let those challenges define him. He moved through his life with a grace, determination, and sense of practicality that is truly exemplary, taking whatever cards he was dealt in stride, shouldering through challenging times without complaint, and always finding humor along the way. He loved his family deeply, and his family deeply loved him. The quiet courage, strength, and tenacity with which he lived his life have been an inspiration for us all.

Surviving him, besides his wife, Carolyn; are two daughters: Kara Foster of Raleigh NC, and Megan (Ryan) Barkley of Rochester NY; and one son, John Foster, of Pittsburgh PA; one grandson, Graham Barkley; one brother, William Foster, of Syracuse; three sisters: Mary (William) Rowe, Cheryl Foster, and Laura (Douglas) Cuthbert, all of Auburn NY; sisters-and brothers-in-law: Pamela Sheridan and George Sexton of Philadelphia and Penn Yan, J. Michael Sheridan of Newtown Square, PA, Frank and Nancy Adonnino of Geneseo, NY, Patrick and Kathleen Ross of Port Charlotte, FL, Peter Sheridan of Philadelphia, PA, and Andrew Sheridan of Chester Springs, PA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Alice Foster; his in-laws, John and Polly Sheridan; and one cousin, Barbara (Bonnie) Dellostritto of Auburn.

Calling hours will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021 at St. Michael's Church, Penn Yan followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Rev. Louis A. Vasile of Auburn will be the celebrant. Interment will be at St. Michael's Cemetery, Penn Yan.

All COVID-19 precautions – including masks and social distancing – will be required.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial donations to St. Michael's Church, 312 Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY or St. Michael's School, 214 Keuka St., Penn Yan, NY.

  1. [S33] The Citizen Online, online, AUBURN — Alice Marie O’Brien Foster, 91, of Auburn, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 3, 2018, at her home where she had lived all her life. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Born Alice Marie O’Brien on June 20, 1926, she was the only child of Charles and Frances Shaw O’Brien. Alice was a graduate of St. Alphonsus School, East High School, Auburn Business School, and completed courses at Auburn Community College. Prior to her marriage, Alice worked in the accounting department at ALCO and Stevens Clothing Store in downtown Auburn.

Alice met her future husband, Robert J. Foster, of Auburn, on a blind date arranged by her good friend, Gloria Fennessy Offenburg. Alice and Bob were married June 25, 1949 in St. Alphonsus Church. The couple renewed their vows at a 50th wedding anniversary Mass there in 1999.

Both Alice and Bob were devoted to their Catholic faith and parish. Alice belonged to many parish groups including the St. Alphonsus Rosary and Altar Society, and she often attended daily Mass. In later years, she was active in the St. Alphonsus Alumni Association, reunion committees, and the Melrose Senior Citizen’s.

For many years, Alice helped to serve lunches to priests at the rectory. When her children were growing up, she was involved in parent organizations at their schools where she was always ready to bake cookies and cakes for bake sales and fundraisers.

Faith, family, and friends meant everything to Alice throughout her active, generous life. She was very close to her family, and her Irish wit and spunk were legendary among those who knew her.

Her home on Anna Street – built by her grandfather Shaw – has been home to four generations of her family and has always been known as a happy gathering place for family, friends and neighbors.

Family Sunday dinners, birthday celebrations, holiday parties, garage sales, mystery parties and haunted houses were held there over the years, each filled with plenty of laughter and fun.

Visitors were often met at the kitchen door with the aroma of fresh-baked cookies or brownies, and Alice’s warm greeting and infectious laughter – along with her ever-present Boston Terrier, Skipper.

She had the gift for making everyone feel right at home, quickly putting newcomers at ease. Everyone was welcome, and often an extra chair would be added to her large dining room table to seat an added guest.

Alice took care of her aging parents and relatives over the years, and she developed a lifelong affinity for helping those in need. Years before Meals on Wheels began, she cooked extra amounts of food and sent piping hot dinners to the homebound and elderly neighbors who no longer cooked for themselves. Her husband and children delivered those hot meals.

A talented knitter, Alice left a legacy of beautiful handmade sweaters, hats, coats, mittens, afghans, and baby clothes to her children, grandchildren, friends and people whom she never knew. Never one to be idle, she enjoyed knitting at night and donating many of her knitted items to anyone in need.

Family road trips also gave Alice great pleasure. She loved to travel, and she was always keen to visit a new city or destination. Her favorite jaunts included New York City in early December, Myrtle Beach, Lake Placid and the Adirondacks, Cape Cod, Stowe Vermont, Notre Dame, Maine and Massachusetts. In August 2016, Alice’s 90th birthday wish was fulfilled as she, and her family made a pilgrimage to Saint Anne De-Beaupre Cathedral near Quebec, Canada where she and Bob had honeymooned in 1949.

Never one to seek the spotlight, Alice was most comfortable working behind the scenes but never wanting any recognition for her generosity. She never wanted to get up in front of a crowd, give a speech or draw attention to her work. Yet, she was the heart of her family and people naturally were drawn to her energy, faith and wonderful spirit.

Alice was predeceased by her parents and husband; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Teresa Foster; niece, Barbara “Bonnie” (Foster) DelloStritto.

Alice is survived by sons and daughters, Robert C. (Carolyn) Foster, William L. Foster, Mary A. (William) Rowe, Cheryl A. Foster, and Laura F. (Douglas) Cuthbert; grandchildren, Kara Foster, Megan (Ryan) Barkley, John Foster, and Connor and Ailish Cuthbert; nieces and nephews, Patricia (Roger) Beer, Margret Foster, William (Patricia) Foster, and David (Anne) Foster; several great-nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, and her faithful four legged companion, Skipper John.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Farrell’s Funeral Service, Inc., 84 South St., Auburn. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 in St. Alphonsus Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Alphonsus Parish or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Alice’s memory.
