The earliest known ancestor of the Babenbergs was one Poppo, who earlyin the 9th century was count in Grapfeld, in the area between modernHesse and Thuringia. One of his sons, Henry, sometimes called count ofthe march and duke in Franconia, fell fighting against the Normans in886; another, Poppo, was count of the march in Thuringia from 880 to 892,when he was deposed by the German Carolingian king Arnulf of Carinthia.The family had been favoured by the emperor Charles the Fat, but Arnulfreversed this policy in favour of the rival family of the Conradines.

The leaders of the Babenbergs were the three sons of Duke Henry, whocalled themselves after their castle of Babenberg on the upper Main,round which their possessions centred.

The rivalry between the two families was intensified by their effortsto extend their authority in the region of the middle Main, and thisquarrel, known as the 'Babenberg feud,' came to a head at the beginningof the 10th century during the troubled reign of the German king Louisthe Child. Two of the Babenberg brothers were killed, and the survivor,Adalbert was summoned before the imperial court by the regent Hatto I,Archbishop of Mainz, a partisan Of the Conradines. He refused to appear,held his own for a time in his castle at Theres against the king'sforces, but surrendered in 906, and in spite of a promise of safe-conductwas beheaded.      Bernard Duke of Franks was born circa 720 at Austrasia, France. He was the son of Charles Martel , Mayor of The Palace of Austrasia and Rotrou of Treves.
     Bernard Duke of Franks Ancestral Roots describes him as younger brother of Pepin the Short.Since they don't indicate half brother or illegitimate brother, I amassuming a full brother.

     Ingeltrude (RothaisChrothais) d' Autun married Pepin Carloman , King of Italy, son of Charlemagne I Holy Roman Emperor and Hildegard of Swabia, at No Marriage.¹ Ingeltrude (RothaisChrothais) d' Autun was born circa 775 at Autun, Saone-et-Loire, Bourgogne, France. She was the daughter of Bernard Duke of Franks.

     Hadwig von Babenberg married Otto 'the Illustrious' Duke of Saxony, son of Ludolph Duke of Saxony and Oda Billung.¹ Hadwig von Babenberg was born circa 853 at Frankish, Lorraine, France.¹ She was the daughter of Heinrich von Babenberg , Margrave in Friesland and Judith (Ingeltrude) of Friuli. Hadwig von Babenberg died on 24 December 903.^1,3

     He Most historians who accept this would derive the Popponid Babenburgs fromHeinrich I von Babenburg, margrave in Friesland (Frisia), who was killedin battle near Paris on 20 August 886. His first wife was apparently anearlier Judith from the Unruoching family, daughter of the margraveEberhard of Friuli and Gisela of Francia. Adalbert was the elder of twodefinite sons of this Heinrich and Judith, and was beheaded with hisbrother Adalhard at theres am Main on 9 September 906. Adalbert waspossibly married (his wife is said to have been a Swabian lady namedBrunhilda), but no children are recorded as far as I know. The onlymale-line descendants that are ascribed to his parents come through the_speculated_ relationship to count Heinrich, grandfather of the brothersPoppo, bishop of Würzburg and Heinrich, archbishop of Trier. Another_speculative_ sibling was Hadwig (b ca 953/5, died 24 December 903),first wife of Otto the Illustrious, duke of the Saxons, who of course hasinnumerable descendants.      Sigebert III (Sisibert) King of Austrasia married Immachilde (Hymnegilde) of Austrasia. Sigebert III (Sisibert) King of Austrasia was born circa 631 at Austrasia.^1,2 He died between 1 February 655 and 656 at Metz, Moselle, Lorraine, France.^1,2
     He Born: in 629, son of Dagobert I, King d'Austrasie and Ragnetrudd'Austrasie, Some sources assert that Sigebert III was born in the year631. Note - between 633 and 656: Sigebert III, son of Dagobert andRagnetrude, was King of Austrasie from 633/634 [at which time he is only9 to 10 years of age -- Thus, Pepin le Vieux or de Landen truly reigns asthe Major Domo] to 656. He reigned under the tutellage of Pepin of Landen[when Pepin de Landen died in 640, Otto succeeded him] and of Grimoald.In 641, the nobles of Austrasia have Otto assassinated and Grimolad, sonof Pepin becames Mayor of the Palace, and the Francs lose theirsovereignty over Thuringia.

By 643, the Francs would lose all authority over the Allemanians(Germans). Between 644 and 645, after humiliating deafeats against theThuringians and the Allemanians, Sigebert III, not having any heir,adopts the son of Grimoald and names him Childebert. In 646, SigebertIII's wife gives him a son, Dagobert II, which did not please Grimoald.Ten years later, Sigebert III dies.

He was a very pious man and founder of numerous monasteries. He wasplaced among the rank of the saints by the Church. Married before 652:Immachilde=Himenechilde, Queen d'Austrasie. Died: on 1 February 656 inFrance.

     Eudes Duke of Aquitaine married Valtrude of Orleans, daughter of Walchigise Comte de Verdun and Valtrude (?). Eudes Duke of Aquitaine was born in 646 at Aquitaine, France. He was the son of Boggis Duke of Aquitaine and Oda of the Franks. Eudes Duke of Aquitaine married an unknown person after 688. He died in 736.

     Valtrude of Orleans married Eudes Duke of Aquitaine, son of Boggis Duke of Aquitaine and Oda of the Franks. Valtrude of Orleans was born in 642 at Orleans, France. She was the daughter of Walchigise Comte de Verdun and Valtrude (?) Valtrude of Orleans died circa 688.

     Lisiard de Fezensac was born circa 782 at Fezensac, Gascony, France. He was the son of Begue I Count of Paris and Aupais of France.

     Imhild of Engern was born circa 750 at Engern, Saxony, Germany. She was the daughter of Warnechin of Engern and Kunhilde of Rugen.
