Seneca Falls businessman George G. Souhan died Saturday May 15th.
Souhan, whose family has been in business in Seneca County for generations, was president and owner of Seneca Knitting Mills and Geb and Souhan Yarn Co. until the mill was sold in 1995.
Over the years, he has owned J. Souhan and Sons Dairy (until 1980); radio station WSFW, which broadcast the “Mooin’ & Chewin' with Souhan” show; and The Gould hotel and restaurant (until 1995), which he and Seneca Falls resident Jim Bero reopened in 1981 after years of disrepair.

Cobblestone Farms and Timothy Farms on Cayuga Lake are also among the Souhan family of businesses.

Souhan served as the county Democratic chairman in 1958 and has run for the state Senate and Assembly.

It was a chat with former U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan more than 20 years ago that laid the groundwork for the 1848 women’s rights convention site to become a national park, and Souhan also helped found North Seneca Ambulance, served as special adviser on economic affairs to former Gov. Hugh Carey and was a member of the Seneca 2000 Committee.

He has contributed to many civic organizations and charities and has served on many public, private and civic boards, including The Board of Trustees of the New York Chiropratic College. George Souhan was also a former president of the Seneca Falls Country Club on Route 89 in Seneca Falls.

He is survived by his wife Susan, two sons and a daughter.
