JOHN, 3rd son of King Henry IV, by his 1st wife, Mary, daughter andcoheir of Humphrey (DE BOHUN), EARL OF HEREFORD, was born 20 June 1389,K.B. 11 October 1399, and K.G. probably soon after his father's accessionto the Crown in 1399, but possibly not till 1402. Warden of the EastMarches, and Captain of Berwick, 1403, he was made CONSTABLE OF ENGLAND,which office was afterwards confirmed to him for life. Joint Ambassadorto Scotland, 1411. In the Parliament held at Leicester 16 May 1414 he wascreated EARL OF KENDAL and DUKE OF BEDFORD for life, which dignities, onsurrender, were regranted to him and the heirs male of his body on 8 July1433. On 24 November 1414 he was created EARL OF RICHMOND, 'with areversion of the Castle, Earldom, Honour and Lordship of Richmond afterthe death of the said Ralph [Nevill], Earl of Westmorland [who died1425], to hold to him the said Duke and the heirs male of his body.' On12 August 1415, when Henry V made his expedltion to France, and again on25 July 1417 and on June 1421, he was appointed GUARDIAN, and on 5December 1422, PROTECTOR OF THE KINGDOM OF ENGLAND. The feudal Viscountcyof Beaumont in Maine, forfeited 1415, by the Duke of Alencon, was grantedto him by Henry V. On 15 August 1415, he defeated the French fleet offHarfleur. Lord High Admiral 1421 till his death. In Sep. 1422 (after thedeath of Henry V), he was made REGENT OF FRANCE, 'using in his stylethese several titles, Regent of the Realm of France, Duke of Bedford,Anjou and Alencon, Earl of Mayenne, Richmond and Kendal, and Constable ofEngland. On 17 August 1424 he commanded the English and Burgundians atthe battle of Verneuil, gaining a bloody victory wherein of the enemy'7,000 French and 2,500 Scots were slain. Admiral of England, Ireland,and Guienne, 26 July 1426. On 7 September 1432 he crowned his nephew,Henry VI, at Paris, as King of France.

He married, 1stly, (contract dated at Troyes, 18 May), at Troyes, June1423, Anne, daughter of Jean, DUKE OF BURGUNDY) by Marguerite, daughterof Albrecht of Bavaria, COUNT OF HAINAULT, HOLLAND, and ZELAND. She died14 November 1432, in childbed, at Paris, and was buried in the Church ofthe Celestines there. M.I. He married, 2ndly, 20 April 1433, atTherouenne, Jacquette, or Jacqueline, daughter of Pierre DE LUXEMBOURGCOUNT OF ST. POL, by Marguerite, daughter of Francesco del Balzo, DUKE OFANDRIA in Apulia, she being then aged Ibout 17. He died s.p.s., 15September 1435, at his residence, ' Joyeux Repos,' at Rouen, aged 46,when all his honours became extinct. He was buried at Rouen. M.I. Hiswidow in (1435-36), was one of the Ladies for whom robes of the Order ofthe Garter were provided. She married, between 6 February 1435/6 and 23March 1436/7, when she had pardon for marriage without license, SirRichard WIDVILLE, afterwards EARL RIVERS (beheaded 1469), and died hiswidow, 30 May 1472, having lived ten years after her daughter Elizabethhad become Queen Consort to Edward IV. RICHARD WYDEVILL, esquire, brother of the half-blood, succeeded toGrafton under Thomas's will (g). In early life he was very probably inthe service of Henry, Earl of Derby, afterwards Henry IV. In 1411 he wasin the retinue of the King's son 'Thomas of Lancaster,' captain ofGuînes; in 1419 he had a grant of the lands and lordships of Préaux,Dangu and Neuville, and in November was appointed bailiff of Gisors,Vernon, Andely and Lions; bailiff of Chaumont in February 1419/20;promoted seneschal of Normandy, January 1420/1; in March 1422/3, acommissioner to receive the surrender of Meulan; in 1423 he waschamberlain to the Duke of Bedford, treasurer-general of Normandy, andcaptain of Caen. He was appointed, February 1424/5, during pleasure, at atime of disturbances in the City, to attend to the safe keeping of theTower of London. In June 1427 and June 1429 he was Lieutenant of Calais,and in March 1430/1 was appointed to attend the young King's person forhalf a year in France; in May 1434 he was retained to serve the King inthe wars in France with 20 men at arms. In July 1433, Knight of theshire, Kent; J.P., 1433-41. He was present at the Great Council meetingat Westminster in April and May 1434, at which the Dukes of Bedford andGloucester contended as to the conduct of the war in France, and, inFebruary 1434/5, one of the commissioners to treat with the Duke ofBurgundy as to the statutes of the Staple of Calais. On the death of theDuke of Bedford he was appointed Lieutenant of Calais, 1 October 1435. Asthe King's esquire he was appointed, 25 January 1436/7, during pleasure,constable of Rochester castle; and 1437-39, took part in variouscommissions in Kent. In 1437 he was sheriff of Northants, and acommissioner to raise a loan there, 1439.

     Joan Bittelsgate was born circa 1385 at Knighton, Wembury, Devonshire, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Bittelsgate , of Knighteston, Sir and Joan (Mary) Beauchamp. Joan Bittelsgate married Richard Wydeville , of La Mote & Grafton, Sir, son of John de Wydeville , of Grafton Regis, Sir and Isabel Godard, circa 1403.3 Joan Bittelsgate died after 17 July 1448.2

     Thomas Bittelsgate , of Knighteston, Sir was born circa 1350 at Knighton, Wembury, Devonshire, England. He was the son of John Bedlisgate , Sir. Thomas Bittelsgate , of Knighteston, Sir married Joan (Mary) Beauchamp, daughter of John Beauchamp , of Lillesdon, Sir and Joan de Bridport, before 1378.3 Thomas Bittelsgate , of Knighteston, Sir died on 31 December 1388 at Maidencombe, Torquay, Devonshire, England. He died between 1389 and 1391.3
     Thomas Bittelsgate , of Knighteston, Sir was also known as John Bodulgate , Sir. He of Knighteston, Over Gabriel, & Maidencombe, Devon, England.
