Mrs. Mina Smith Maples, 41, died at her home, 2654 Selma Avenue, Saturday at 11:45 pm after a short illness. She is survived by her husband C.C. Maples; three daughters, Misses Emma, Charlotte Rose, and Dorothy Maples; four sons, Nolan, Lynn, Joe and Jimmy Maples; father J. M. Smith of Thorn Grove; four sisters, Mrs. Hubert Lakin of Knoxville, Mrs. C.C. Hawes of Knoxville, Mrs. Perry Atchley of Thorn Grove and Mrs. Herbert Kitts of Thorn Grove and two brothers, Coy and Fred Smith of Thorn Grove.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm today at the Thorn Grove Christian Church with the Rev. Murph Tawver officiating. Burial will be in Thorn Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sam King, Clay Barber, Ethridge Hagard, James Cannon, Myers Cannon, and Burl Cates. The funeral party will leave the home at 12:30 pm. today for Thorn Grove. LAKIN, VERNA SMITH--age 98, died Monday, March 8, 2004. She graduated from the University of Tennessee Magna Cum Lauda. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Hubert Lakin. She taught for over 30 years in the Knox County Public Schools, mostly at Inskip Elementary. She was a member of the Fountain City Christian Church. She is survived by: her daughters & sons-in-law, Vanda & Roger Thayer & Patricia & Jack Watson; four grandchildren, Edmond Lakin Thayer, Cinnamon Thayer, Bradley Watson, & Amanda Duncan; two grandchildren-in-law, Janalin Watson & Joel Watson; a sister, Margaret Kitts; & brother Fred Smith. The family would like to express appreciation to Karen Payne, close companion and helper, and devoted staff of the Shannondale Health Care Center. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 am Friday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for grave site at 11 am. Rev. Darrell Cook officiating.
