Dr. James Houston Jr. NEWTON -- Dr. James Houston Jr., 96, died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at the Sussex County Homestead, where he resided since September. Dr. Houston was born on June 9, 1911, and raised in Paterson, the eldest of four children of James Houston Sr. and Mary Dale Hayes. After high school he joined the merchant marine but returned to Paterson to attend Paterson Normal School, now William Paterson University, Class of 1940. In 1936 he founded and was the first editor of the school newspaper, The Beacon. At the outbreak of World War II Dr. Houston enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard as a boson's mate and saw active duty in Greenland and the South Pacific. Following the war he completed his doctor of education degree at Columbia University's Teachers College. He joined the faculty of then-Paterson State College and later served as chairman of the Education Department. Reactivating the defunct WP soccer program with a club team in 1957, he led the program to varsity status in 1959, serving as soccer head coach until 1962. Dr. Houston received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1972, retired from William Paterson College in 1981 as professor emeritus, and was inducted into the Alumni Association's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. Following a divorce in 1966, he married Dolores Mendel (nee Majorek) in 1970, adopting her two children, Richard and Leslie. Dolores predeceased him in 1977. Dr. Houston maintained his interest in travel, teaching at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, during summer sessions, and visiting relatives and friends in Scotland and elsewhere in the UK. After retirement he took a part-time job at Blair Academy. A car accident in 1992 left him partially handicapped; however, he enjoyed many more years at his home in Hampton indulging in his hobbies of woodworking, reading and crossword puzzles. He is survived by Mary Jane Houston-Koren, assistant vice president of The Commonwealth Fund, New York City; Leslie Houston, deputy police chief in Long Beach Township; and Richard Houston, of Breckenridge Resorts, Vail, Colo. He also is survived by several nephews and nieces, particularly Martha Newbold of Beermerville, Lorna Varady of North Haledon and Evelyn Jelliff of Sea Girt. Funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, 156 Main Street, Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials and donations may be made in his memory to the William Paterson University Foundation, 300 Pompton Road, Hobart Manor, Wayne, NJ 07470.
